About Catherine:
Combining a love of the Northern Canadian landscape and wildlife with a desire to tell a story is the motivation behind my current artwork. Living year round in Huntsville Ontario provides many opportunities to explore the beautiful wilderness of Muskoka and Algonquin by kayak, cross-country skis or hiking.
While I enjoy painting traditional landscapes; dreaming up characters in slightly surreal situations is much more fun, the landscape being a perfect setting. Most of my current work is in watercolour with the addition of pen, ink and pastels at times. Watercolours have a certain luminous dreamy quality which fascinate me but they are definitely challenging, as mistakes are difficult to correct (of course I never make mistakes). I have worked in acrylics for larger works such as wildlife murals in a Nature Centre.
Masters of the past that inspire me are Chagall, Bruegel and Picasso. It’s hard to live in Group of Seven territory and not have their influence sneak into my brain as well. The illustrators Arthur Rackham, Lisbeth Zwerger, Julie Vivas, Maurice Sendak, Dave McKean to name a few are all favourite storytelling artists. Music is also a big part of my life as I am a pianist and usually paint to classical music with its wordless, timeless, drama. I try to capture those rhythms, emotions and movement in my artwork.
My art training began with a diploma in Interpretive Illustration at Sheridan Tech. I have worked as a wildlife mural artist and graphic designer at a Nature Centre, in magazine design, as an illustrator and children’s art educator and have displayed my work in various Fine Art Shows.
My original artwork can be viewed at my home studio in Huntsville, Ontario. I also have Fine Art Giclees and cards at my home, my online Etsy store and The Apothecary Shop in Port Carling, Ontario. Please contact me for further info. I also welcome commissions and Illustration work.
