Coming to AO in Huntsville on Sept.30

You won’t want to miss this presentation. Author and canoe tripper, Kevin Callan, will be giving a
demonstration on how to be a Happy Camper. He’ll be showing tips such as:

• keeping dry, packing light,
• making true camp coffee,
• baking traditional bannock,
•  cooking a gourmet meal and
• serving up a tasty bush martini.

Special guests will be his wife, Alana, 8 year old daughter, Kyla, and dog Ellie to
help out with the presentation. The family completed a 12 day canoe trip across
Algonquin park this summer and will be showing a few techniques they used along
the way as well.

Kevin Callan is the author of thirteen books, including the best selling “The Happy Camper”,
the incredibly popular series of paddling guides, and most reviewed “Wilderness
Pleasures: A Practical Guide to Camping Bliss”. On a regular basis, he presents
across North America and has been a key speaker at all the major canoe events
for over 25 years.

Callan is also a frequent guest on radio and television, and field editor for Explore. His
writing and photography appears in numerous other periodicals, including a
regular column for Canoeroots Magazine. Callan has hosted several pilots and assisted with BBC, Ray Mears, and the Discovery Channel in film projects. He is also a frequent host on a number of
morning shows and hosts his own CBC Radio show coast to coast titled “The Happy
Camper”. Callan is the producer and host of the new Wilderness Quest
documentary and is a winner of six National Magazine
Awards and three film awards.  He was also made Patron Paddler for Paddle Canada.

Joseph Boyden is a novelist, short story writer and teacher  of creative writing. His novel Three Day  Road (2005), a nominee for the Governor General’s Award in 2005,  won the Rogers Writers’ Trust fiction prize,  the McNally Robinson Aboriginal Book of the Year award and the Amazon/Books in Canada  first novel award. His second novel, Through  Black Spruce (2008) won the Scotia Bank Giller prize.

Joseph lives in New Orleans where he teaches creative writing at the University of New Orleans.

Alissa York’s award-winning short fiction has appeared in various literary journals and anthologies.  Her first novel,
Mercy, published by Random House Canada in 2003, was a Canadian bestseller. Dutch, French and US editions have appeared since.

York’s second novel, Effigy, was published by Random
House Canada in April 2007, short-listed for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and long-listed for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. International rights to the book have sold in Holland, Italy, France and the US.

Schools component

The schools component offers elementary students from the Huntsville area the chance to interact with published authors in various capacities including listenening to readings, writing tips and Q & A sessions.
High school students have had the opportunity to listen to and interact with well-respected authors such as Richard B Wright.

Writer’s workshops

We try to support local writer’s by offering workshops conducted by prominent members of the writing community. We also bring in publishers and agents to speak with local writers.

Author Events

Over the course of the weekend, we have series of readings, presentations, talks, discussion forums, interviews and Q & A sessions with a wide variety of authors from around Canada and beyond.

Possible Addition to the Programme – Family Day

This year we are applying for funding to offer participants a day of free activities designed to entertain and education children and their families in a day of fun.

We try to support all authors, including well-established, independent, local and self-published authors.

We support community and local, independent business

We do everything we can to support other community groups and always try to buy local and support local independently owned business.

We try to make our events accessible to as many people as possible

We would like to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be involved in literary activities.  We therefore make a committment to offer a range of free and low cost events in our programme.

We support literacy in our community

We are committed to supporting school children in literary endeavours by including a strong school’s component in our event.

We treat people with respect

We also aim to support each other in the organisation, to treat each other with respect and to conduct all business in a caring and supportive atmosphere.

Huntsville is one of the most spectacular locations on the planet. Surrounded by pristine lakes and forests, the quaint town is full of history and charm. Add to that magnificent fall colours and you have the perfect backdrop for a great weekend of literary entertainment.
